Bristol Empire Dragons & Paddle power raises vital funds

Saturday, 15 October 2011 20:19

A TEN-strong team paddled their way from Bath to Bristol to help provide clean water and sanitation for African families.

The five men and five women steered a dragon boat along the 18 mile-route between the cities, taking less time than they thought to complete the journey.

They reached the Cottage pub in Baltic Wharf in six hours, having left Pulteney Bridge in the expectation of an eight-hour trip.

So far they have raised £1,100 for their efforts, which will go into a fund for the charity WaterAid.

The money will be used for a project in Mali to give access to clean water for 4,000 people and provide sanitation services for 5,000.

The fundraisers work for Wessex Water and GPS Panels and belong to Business4life, a group of 12 companies who joined forces for a year to raise money for WaterAid.

Kerry Wyatt, one of the Wessex Water team, said it was hoped to reach £40,000 between them and already there was more than £11,000 in the fund.

She said: "Paddling the boat was hard work because none of us had done that kind of thing before. But we all pulled together and did really well."

The group had been trained for the challenge by Rob Britton, of Bristol Empire Dragons, who also loaned the dragon boat for the trip.

Anyone who would like to support the fundraising cause can do so by visiting the group's website at www.justgiving.com/B4LDragonboat Challenge.

We help Fundraisers prepare and paddle 18 miles for Charity

Tuesday, 27 September 2011 10:50

PADDLE power will help a group of Bristol business workers raise money for charity.

A 10-strong crew from Wessex Water and GPS Panels will paddle from Bath to Bristol on October 15, to raise money for WaterAid.

The colleagues will make the 18 mile journey from Pulteney Weir to Bristol Docks in a dragon boat, and have set themselves eight hours to complete the challenge.

The fundraiser has been organised by Business4life, a team of 12 different companies who joined together for a year to raise more than £30,000 for the charity.

One of the organisers, Kerry Wyatt, of Wessex Water, said: "We have attended weekly training sessions held by Rob Britton of Bristol Empire Dragons to prepare for the challenge. We would really like to thank Rob and his team for kindly donating their time, use of the club facilities and the dragon boat free of charge."

All the money raised by Business4Life will be donated to WaterAid, in particular a project in Gao, Mali, providing access to clean water for 4,000 people and sanitation services for 5,000. To sponsor the team visit www.just giving.com/B4L DragonBoatChallenge.

BDA national league - the final results

Wednesday, 21 September 2011 11:16

As the summer racing season draws to a close, the final results of the BDA racing league have been published on the BDA website: http://www.dragonboat.org.uk/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1

Bristol (racing as Tao dragons) finished mid-table in both the 200m and 500m events so well done to everyone who trained hard and paddled even harder to get this result!

A big thank you goes to our coach Gary ("make pain your friend"!) for pushing us in training sessions to do what we sometimes thought was impossible and also to Rob for some great race helming this season in quite challenging conditions at times!

Training will continue on sunday mornings through the winter where we will be focusing on stamina and endurance and of course we will be racing at the Henley Winter Series to defend our title, so see you on the water!
